The Pionus parrot is becoming a very popular parrot with many people.  They are medium size and are very quiet for a parrot.  They do not scream or screech.  They can learn to talk but they are not the best talkers.  The Pionus parrot is the best parrot for apartment living.  The Pionus parrots do well when they are left alone all day.  They do not demand your constant attention like other parrots.

Pionus parrots will not scream and screech if they do not receive you undivided attention.  The Pionus parrot is almost perfect as parrots go.  There are several species of Pionus parrots to choose from.  They are all different.

The Maximillian is very popular due to its availability.  They are one of the larges of the Pionus parrots.  The Blue Head is popular because of its beautiful blue feathers.  It is a little smaller than the Maximillian.  The bronze Wing is beautiful and their personality is great.  The White cap is the smallest.  Some of them have an attitude if things do not go their way.  They are usually very sweet and affectionate.  They need a little more attention than the other Pionus parrots

Pionus parrots need to have their diet made up of 20 to 30 percent of a high quality low fat pellet for parrots.  If you possibly can feed organic pellets as they are best for your parrot.  Your parrot will need 70 to 80 percent of his diet to be made up of a high quality parrot seed mixture.  You should also feed your parrot some fresh vegetables, cooked beans, cooked rice and a small amount of fruit.  If possible feed organic fruit and vegetables.  If fresh vegetables and fruit are not available use dehydrated ones.  They work great and are easy to store.  Parrots usually love them.

In warm weather give your parrot fresh water for a bath twice a day.  Leave it in his cage for a couple of hours and then take it out.  A Lixit bottle will work best for drinking water.  Give you parrot fresh drinking water everyday.

Pionus parrots need a large cage because they love to climb and play.  Their cage must be a minimum of 24x24x32 inches with ¾ inch between bars.  If you have the room a larger cage would be better.  The more room you provide for your Pionus parrot the happier he will be.  You must provide your parrot with many toys to play with.  Change his toys around so he does not get bored with the same old toys.  If you can get your parrot a cage with a playpen he would really love it.  The more room your parrot has the happier he will be.  The best type of cage to get for your Pionus parrot is an acrylic cage.  They are easy to clean and are very attractive.
