Most people throw out their avocado sees, but these large seeds can become beutiful trees, or even nice house plants.  Avocados like warm humid temperatures and grow best in the Southern United States through Central America and into South America.  Many of the avocados you buy probably come from Mexico or southern California; if you live in the right climate, plant some trees and give them a little time perhaps you can get avocados from your yard.

Avocados take a bit of time to sprout and there are a variety of methods used to help them along.  Most likely the seed will take at least a month or more to sprout.  I will breifly explain two methods for sprouting an avocado seed, one by sprouting in a cup of water, and a traditional method of sprouting in soil.  When preparing the seed to spreout whether sprouting in a cup or soil, place the seed so that the flat part of the seed is facing downward - this is where the roots will form.

One method I have tried is to suspend the seed halfway immersed in water by supporting it with toothpicks stuck into the sides of the avocado and resting on the rim of a cup,  this method worked pretty well, however you may begin to notice some mold on the seed and wil need to change the water regularly

I have also found pretty good success with soaking the seed for a couple of days, then planting it in some potting soil. It is important to keep the soil moist.  Eventually the seed will begin to split, once this occurs you will soon notice a stem appear.  This first stem will grow pertty quickly and the plant can easily get to be over a foot in a few months.

Once your avocado tree has begun to grow, you can use it as a house plant or plant it outdoors.

I spend too much time on the computer, but luckily it is rewarding.

Nice article, Avocados make pretty trees - they do seem to take a while to sprout though.
