Make a patchwork room devider

Room dividers are very versatile.  They can be used to divide a large room to create a private area or just to add a special touch to your room décor.  You must first decide what size and type of room divider you want.  There are three basic types of room dividers.  You can have a folding panel, flat panel or hanging curtain type of divider.  The folding panel room divider usually has 3 or 4 panels.  This type of room divider is made with a wood frame with hinges. The one panel room divider is the easiest to make.  It also has a wood frame and must have feet so it will stand up.  If you decide on a curtain type divider you will have to attach it to the ceiling.  If you use a track it works great because you can slide your divider back and forth. 

If you want a folding panel divider you must decide how many panels you want your divider to have.  You must decide what you want to frame your divider in.  Your divider can be made up of one panel or you can have several panels.  If you use several panels they will need to be hinged together. You will make your patchwork to match the style of room divider you decide on.  It can be a folding panel, panel or curtain room divider. They will all look great so the choice is yours.

After you have decided on a type you are ready to make your patchwork.  Sometimes if you are a beginner using squares for your patchwork is best.  If you are making a curtain type room divider you will need to decide how long and how wide you want it to be.  If you want your divider to be 8 feet long you will need 16 blocks that are 6 inches in size for the length.  If you want it to be 7 feet wide you will need 14 blocks for the width.  You will need a total of 224 6 inch blocks.  You will cut your blocks 6 ½ inches so when you sew them together they will be six inches in size.

Arrange your blocks so you have a pleasing pattern that satisfies you.  When you are satisfied start sewing the blocks together.  Sew 16 blocks together in a row.  Use ¼ inch seams so your finished blocks will be 6 inches.  Make 14 rows of 16 blocks.  After you have done this sew the 14 rows together.  When you are finished you will have a patchwork that is 14 rows wide and 16 blocks long.  Iron all the seams so they are flat.

Lay your finished patchwork top on a flat surface and lay the batting on top. For your room divider use a thin batting.   The batting is just to give the curtain weight so it will hang right.  You can use a flannel sheet or flannel blanket.  They both will work well. Next lay the backing on top of the batting.  Use safety pins to fasten everything together.  If you want your divider to be patchwork on both sides make another patchwork piece like the front. To hold your patchwork together insert a needle with yarn or crochet thread in the corner of each block.  Pull it back through to the front.  Tie and cut the tread to desired length.  Do this in the corners of every block.  This is the easiest way to hold your patchwork room divider together so it will hang straight and look gorgeous.
