IRON METAL SCRAP

The Steel mills all over world have a huge requirement of Iron Metal Scrap or HMS scrap as most commonly known. HMS stands for Heavy Melting Scrap, and most of the business is carried out in this name only. The value and the quality of the HMS Scrap is calculated on the thickness of the scrap. The HMS Scrap is mainly comes in two qualities, that is HMS 1 and HMS 2. The HMS 1 is of superior quality and has the thickness of above 6mm and below 8mm and where as most of the HMS 2 thickness is between 4mm to 6mm.

The most demand is of HMS 1-2 which is mixed in the ratio of 80: 20 means that the HMS 1 quality is 80% and HMS 2 quality is 20%. The invoices and the BLs also mention the same. Lots of countries don’t allow the import of HMS Scrap material if its mention only IRON SCRAP or METAL SCRAP on the invoices or BLs, there are plenty of chances that the cargo will be ceased.

It should be clearly mention, HMS 1-2 or HMS Scrap 1 else HMS Scrap 2 along with the certificate of origin from the nominated Chamber of Commerce where the loading and dispatch port is located in case it’s imported.

The HMS Scrap is traded in two kinds of packing, one is break bulk is maximum in use and other is loose break bulk. The Purchaser has to be very specific when the packing is available in containers. No one can say what is available in container because you will be permitted only to open the container when you have paid all the import taxes and cleared the containers from the port. The cheating cases have been mainly reported of under wait and mud/stone stuffing along with some other impurities.

The other point to be kept in mind is of the standard sizes. The Sizes of HMS Scrap is governed by ISRI (Institute of Scrap and Recycling Industries). The HMS Scrap falls under the ISRI 200 to 206, which means the standard Scrap sizes and the thickness. For more details you can visit the ISRI website.

The most important thing is the no ammunition / non-military scrap certificate from the Chamber of Commerce or any equivalent agency.  This is the major problem when the scrap is being imported from a location where the war zone is nearby or the location itself falls in war zone.
