Aegisthus, the suitors, and Odysseus’ crew are all separate situations in the epic story the Odyssey but the themes that bind them all is their selfishness, greed, and failure to listen to the gods.  It is this flaw within their characters that leads them to their tragic ends.
In Aegisthus case, he saw a way to take the throne of Mycenae from Agamemnon, who was a way fighting the war in Troy.  His plan was to seduce Agamemnon’s wife Clytemnestra.  He used her grief about losing her daughter at the hands of Agamemnon to seduce you and encourage her to later kill Agamemnon.  Aegisthus was forewarned by the gods not to carry out his plan but still chose to go through with it which later causes him to be killed by Agamemnon’s son Orestes.
Penelope’s suitors are so selfish that they lounge around on a regular basis and taking advantage of Penelope’s hospitality.  If they really cared about her they wouldn’t act so rude.  The suitors only care about taking Odysseus’s place as ruler of Ithaca.  When Telemachus suggest that the stop abusing the hospitality of he and his mother, one of the suitors blames Penelope for their behavior.  They ignore the sign from the gods in the form of dueling eagles and only band together to hatch a plan to kill Telemachus because he takes actions against them.  The suitors’ greed and disrespect for the gods leads them to their death at the hands of Odysseus.
Odysseus’ crew’s greed and selfishness gets them in a lot of trouble along their long journey to get home and unfortunately because of his crew‘s greed and selfish behavior they never made it home.  The crew’s worst mistake happens on the island Thrinacia, island of Helios, the sun god.  The crew gets stuck there for about a month and their food supply runs low.  Even though they are forewarned about slaughtering the sun god’s cattle they do it any way.  They make a meager sacrifice to the gods for slaughtering the cattle but it isn’t enough to prevent them from dying when Zeus sent a monstrous storm to kill them.
The deaths of all these characters in the story The Odyssey could possible been prevented if only the people involved listen to the gods and though beyond their own petty wants and ambition.
